Background of the Study
Efforts to revitalize the Efik language in Calabar are crucial for preserving cultural heritage and ensuring linguistic continuity in an increasingly globalized environment. Policy interventions by government and cultural organizations aim to integrate Efik into educational curricula, media, and community programs. These policies focus on developing standardized teaching materials, promoting Efik in digital media, and organizing cultural events that celebrate Efik heritage. The interventions are designed to enhance language proficiency and boost public usage among both young and older generations. However, challenges such as resource limitations, inadequate training, and competing influences from dominant global languages often undermine these efforts. This study evaluates the effectiveness of policy interventions for Efik language revitalization by examining policy documents, educational practices, and media outputs. The research seeks to identify successful strategies and obstacles, providing recommendations for improving the impact of these interventions on the sustained use of Efik in Calabar.

Statement of the Problem
Despite targeted policy interventions to revitalize the Efik language, their effectiveness in Calabar remains uncertain. Issues such as insufficient funding, limited teacher training, and inconsistent media implementation hinder progress. These challenges compromise the revitalization efforts, leaving Efik vulnerable to gradual decline. This study addresses these problems by assessing the impact of current policy interventions and identifying the key obstacles that need to be overcome to ensure the language’s sustainability.

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of current Efik language revitalization policies.

  • To identify challenges in policy implementation.

  • To recommend strategies for enhancing policy outcomes.

Research Questions

  • What challenges impede their success?

  • What measures can improve the revitalization efforts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of policy interventions for Efik language revitalization, offering insights for policymakers, educators, and cultural advocates. The findings will guide improvements in resource allocation and program design, ensuring the sustainability of the Efik language in Calabar.
